In a significant step towards strengthening astronomy and space science education in Tamil Nadu, CSTERC Techno Science LLP formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Physics, Jamal Mohamed College, Tiruchirappalli. The collaboration marked an important milestone in CSTERC’s efforts to build stronger connections between academic institutions, astronomy educators, researchers, and students across the state.

The MoU was envisioned as a framework for collaborative activities in astronomy education, space science outreach, skill development, research-oriented learning, and capacity building. Through this partnership, CSTERC and the Department of Physics aimed to create opportunities for students and faculty members to engage with astronomy beyond the conventional classroom environment and gain exposure to contemporary developments in astronomy and space technology.

Jamal Mohamed College, with its long-standing academic presence and active Department of Physics, provided a valuable institutional platform for expanding astronomy education among higher-education students. CSTERC brought its experience in astronomy education, telescope-based learning, citizen science, space science programmes, and practical training to the collaboration. Together, the institutions sought to bridge the gap between academic learning and hands-on engagement with astronomy.

One of the important objectives of the partnership was to encourage experiential astronomy education. Students could be introduced to observational astronomy, telescope handling, astronomical data, celestial objects, and emerging areas of space science through workshops, training programmes, lectures, and practical activities. Such initiatives were intended not only to generate interest in astronomy but also to demonstrate how students with a background in physics and related disciplines could pursue further studies, research, and careers in the space sector.

The MoU also reflected CSTERC’s broader vision of decentralizing access to astronomy education in Tamil Nadu. Astronomy learning should not remain limited to a small number of specialized institutions or urban centres. By working with colleges and universities across different regions, CSTERC aimed to establish a wider network of institutions capable of conducting meaningful astronomy and space science activities for their students.

The collaboration with Jamal Mohamed College also created a foundation for future joint initiatives, including faculty development programmes, student training, astronomy workshops, research and citizen-science activities, telescope-based observations, and other space science education programmes. These activities could provide students with opportunities to move from simply learning about the Universe to actively observing, analysing, questioning, and contributing to scientific activities.

For CSTERC, the signing of the MoU was more than a formal institutional agreement. It represented another step in its continuing mission to make astronomy and space science education more accessible, practical, and research-oriented. The partnership demonstrated the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and science organisations in developing the next generation of astronomy enthusiasts, educators, researchers, and space technology professionals.

The association with Jamal Mohamed College therefore became part of CSTERC’s growing network of academic collaborations and its long-term journey towards building a stronger and more inclusive astronomy education ecosystem in Tamil Nadu.
